Wood Deck System (Above Grade)

The MULTICOAT® METAL LATHE WATERPROOF SYSTEM is a multi-layer protective coating designed for above grade decks. The system applies MULTI-BASE, a resin modified cementitious base coat embedded with 2.5 galvanized metal lathe. The system adds an elastomeric waterproofing membrane (MULASTICOAT®) with a synthetic resin modified cementitious top coating. (KRETE KOTE 2000 or TOP COAT 2000) The METAL LATHE WATERPROOF SYSTEM is designed to withstand heavy foot traffic on decks, ramps, walkways, etc. The METAL LATHE WATERPROOF SYSTEM can be applied to wood and most other surfaces or substrates in need of a waterproofing and/or fire resistant protective coating.

*Can also be used as an Underlayment Waterproofing System (layers 1-4)

Wood Deck System (Above Grade)

Coverage:

MULTI-BASE: 40-60 sf. ft per bag
MULASTICOAT® (waterproofing membrane):
40 to 50 sq. ft. per gallon (2 coats).
KRETE KOTE/TOP COAT 2000
– 100 sq. ft. per bag (base and texture coat). (See “PACKAGING AND STORAGE”)
COLORSEAL
150– 200 sq. ft. per gallon (2 coats).

Application & Use:

SURFACE PREPARATION: All substrates must be structurally sound, free from all grease, oil, paint, dirt, dust, sealers, curing compounds, and other foreign materials which may prevent proper bonding. Substrates should be constructed in compliance with all applicable building codes. Plywood substrates, including tongue and groove plywood, must be 5/8” minimum thickness, exterior grade CC PTS plywood, OSB, or better 16” oc maximum support spacing, edges blocked, all fastened with 8 penny ring shank nails or equivalent, on maximum 6” centers. (NOTE: Plywood/OSB must be nailed on all four edges.) Moisture content should be below 15%. Use moisture meter to check. NOTE: ALL ABOVE GRADE DECKS SHOULD BE PROPERLY VENTED, FLASHED, AND SLOPED FOR DRAINAGE.

APPLICATION: Lay out 2.5 galvanized metal lathe in a staggered pattern over the entire plywood/OSB surface overlapping the metal flashing to the edge of the deck surface. Make sure the metal lathe joints do not mirror the plywood/OSB joints, minimum 6”away from any joint. The metal lathe joints must overlap a minimum 1”.

Staple metal lathe with minimum 7/8” crown by a minimum 5/8” long corrosion resistant staple spaced 3”oc in the field and 1”oc in all metal lathe overlap joints, plywood joints and perimeter of the deck.

Mix MULTI-BASE per instructions on the bag and pour over the metal lathe. Trowel onto the deck covering the metal lathe and allow to dry completely.

MULASTICOAT® is then applied over entire surface in two (2) coats with roller, using firm pressure. First coat is allowed to dry to the touch, usually 1-2 hours depending on ambient temperature. The second coat is applied crisscross to the first coat. Immediately broadcast sand into the 2nd coat of MULASTICOAT while it is still wet.  MULASTICOAT must be applied at 40-60 mils thick (wet). After product has dried completely minimum of 24 hours or longer in colder weather, but prior to application of the KRETE KOTE/TOP COAT, (the finish coat),brush off loose sand from substrate.

KRETE KOTE and TOP COAT are furnished in 65lb bags and field mixed with potable water. Mix vigorously to disperse all lumps and to thoroughly wet all particles. Use a margin trowel to clear vessel sides. Adjust to desired consistency by adding dry material or small amounts of water. For best results let material stand in the bucket 3-5 minutes then add a small amount of water and rebreak material. This will add additional pot life.

The wearing surface can KRETE KOTE or TOP COAT be coated with ACRATHANE COLORSEAL, which are both applied by trowel or squeegee in one coat plus texture coat. As an option, the surface can be topped with an alternate wearing surface like light weight concrete, tile, stone, brick etc., and this will be your visual wearing surface.

PACKAGING and STORAGE: MULASTICOAT® – furnished in 1 and 5 gallon containers, 55 gallon drums and 275 gallon totes. MULTI-BASE, KRETE KOTE/TOP COAT 2000 – furnished in 65 lb. bags. COLORSEAL/MULTISTAIN – furnished in 1 and 5 gallon pails. Store at 40-90oF in Dry Area Stitch Bond Polyester Fabric, 12″ x 324′ Shelf life is approximately 24 months in unopened bags and approximately 18 months in opened pails.
